A high-pressure pump puts the fuel under pressure and delivers it to a common pipe that serves as a pressure storage tank. The pressure is regulated by electronic control valves to maintain the pressure required by the electronic control unit in the common pipeline. The fuel then reaches the injector and occupies two compartments, one above and one below the atomizer needle. The two opposing forces cancel each other out and the needle remains closed thanks to a small spring. The upper compartment, called the control chamber, has a vent regulated by a solenoid or piezoelectric control valve. When the electronic control unit opens the valve, the compartment above the needle is emptied, the pressure in the lower compartment controls the opening of the needle valve and starts the injection process in the combustion chamber, which ends only when the command is interrupted by the valve; the pressure buildup in the control chamber causes the atomization needle to close.
